The Naval Special Warfare Command will change leadership Sept. 5 at the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. Rear Adm. Garry J. Bonelli will relinquish command to Rear Adm. Edward G. Winters III at 10 a.m. during a ceremony adjacent to the headquarters building.
Guest speaker will be Commander, United States Special Operations Command, Adm. Eric T. Olson.
Winter was selected for flag rank on Aug. 1, 2007. Born in Hanover, N.H., he graduated from the University of West Florida in Pensacola in May 1979 with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry. In October 1981, he began his career as a SEAL by reporting as platoon commander to Underwater Demolition Team 22 in Virginia Beach, Va.
His decorations include the Special Warfare breast insignia, Naval Parachutist breast insignia, two Defense Distinguished Service Medals, Legion of Merit, three Bronze Star Medals, five Defense Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various unit and personal citations.
