Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma is 77.5 acres of land which overlooks San Diego Bay. It is the final resting place for fallen service members at San Pasqual in 1846 and USS Bennington victims in 1905. Fort Rosecrans became a national cemetery Oct 5, 1934 and is California’s 55th historical landmark. The recent addition of concrete walls around the cemetery in place of chain link fencing allows room for cremated remains, since burial space is no longer available. Due to lack of space for fallen military members, the Department of Veterans Affairs opened the Miramar National Cemetery.
